The Review - An International Literary Magazine
The Review promotes poetry, translations,
fiction, interviews and book reviews from all over the world. Published in London, UK, and
only in its fifth issue, The Review's past includes three countries and many
great writers.
The first issue was designed and published with the help of a Louisiana State Arts Council
grant in 1995. Authors and poets who contributed to the premiere issue included R. S.
Thomas, Robert Olen Butler, Dana Gioia, X. J, Kennedy, Dave Smith, Paul Zimmer and Susan
Ludvigson. It was a great success and in 1996, the magazine won a subsequent grant to
publish the second issue.
The spring 1996 issue was no disappointment. With an interview with W. D. Snodgrass and
work from such illustrious writers as Miroslav Holub, William Jay Smith, James Ragan,
Donald Hall, R. S. Gwynn and Ralph Adamo, The Review had very much sprung into
life. By the end of 1996, change was afoot, and The Review moved to Vancouver, Canada, to
continue its publication, although this time without Arts Council support.
A newly designed third issue was released during the summer of 1997, and as expected, the
content was exemplary: an interview with Dana Gioia; work by Al Purdy, Keith Maillard,
Peter Abbs, Michael Donaghy, H. L. Hix, Jacques Rancourt, Anne Stevenson, Gabriel Zaid,
Louise Dupré and George Szirtes.
The fourth issue, the final to be printed in North
America, included poets of such distinction as Marilyn Hacker, Hugo Williams and John Wood
as well as fiction from Marie-Andrée Lamontagne and an interview with Paul Zimmer.
However, still on the move, The Review relocated to London where it continues its
tradition of publishing only the most exciting contemporary work.
